As a loyal devotee of dark blue denim, it is with bated breath that I look forward to welcoming the exciting garment designs made with this material for the spring/summer 2011 fashion collections that will soon fill shop floors all over the world.
Although denim and jeans have been around in the fashion industry for over two hundred years, and despite reaching a considerable apogee of stylishness in the 1970s by the hand of designers such as Gloria Vanderbilt, their connotations as, respectively, fabric and garment of choice for manual labourers have always precluded them from attaining the respect of high fashion. Fortunately, the slovenly comfort that led Neil Diamond to write a song about wanting to be ‘Forever in Blue Jeans’ is about to change.
For 2011, and partly owing to the revival of 1970s trends including the urban glamour that Vanderbilt’s jeans embodied, expect womenswear and menswear designers to bring denim proudly to the fore in the most creatively accomplished shapes.
