As 2010 comes to a close and we celebrate 2011, it gives us time for reflection on the past year and time to ponder the year to come. After deep inner reflection, the best and worst fashion trends of 2010 have been weighed in on and compiled.

For fashion, there are many trends the sighted world will be happy to see go with the old year including the bizarre choices in designer footwear like couture clogs and boot sandals, as well as high-waisted jeans and heels with socks.

Worst:
1. Couture Clogs- In a year that probably takes the price for worst footwear of all time, Chanel, Celine, and Louis Vuitton topped them all with their “couture clogs.” They weren’t cute when your mother wore them to the Three Dog Night concert and they’re not cute now. Going Dutch is not a good idea for dating or for shoes.

2. Boot Sandals- Oxymoronic fashion is never a good idea… we should have already learned this lesson from Lady Gaga’s innerwear as outwear fashion statements when she wore underwear to board a plane at JFK airport…and her yoga class, and a baseball game…

3. High-Waisted Jeans- Stars embraced “mom jeans” in 2010 with stars like Kim Kardashian and Jessica Simpson sparking a trend for the high-waisted jeans ubiquitous to football mums everywhere.

4. Shoes with Socks- schoolgirl fashion made a comeback in the 90’s with Britney Spears’s schoolgirl skirt and again in 2010 when grown women began wearing ankle socks with shoes, featuring little girl touches like ruffles, bows, and lace.

Despite the many bad trends sparked by designers and Lady Gaga in 2010, there were a few fashion trends to miss from the old year.

Best:
1. Draping and Metallic fabrics made for fun, flirty, new takes on the cocktail dress. Women everywhere were relieved to embrace draped cocktail dresses after the uber-tight trends that had been appearing everywhere, allowing us to breathe in 2010. Metallic and metallic brocade fabrics were a fun variation on the cocktail dress that turned heads and made a great eveningwear statement.

2. Gladiator Sandals- Gladiator sandals and shoes made a footwear fashion statement in every shape, color, and price point. Whether you wanted designer footwear from Miu Miu or a pair from Steve Madden, gladiator sandals were everywhere in metallics, suedes, studded, grommeted, ankle-high, or calf-high.

3. Thigh High Boots- Although thigh high boots sound straight out of Pretty Woman, designers applied new techniques and textures to an old standard. Whether they were suede and scrunched or leather with cut-outs, thigh high boots were a hot addition to every woman’s shoe closet. The length also gave designers more room to work with buckles, cutouts, and other details, allowing them to experiment with new footwear trends without overcrowding the shoe.

4. Rompers- Rompers were the trend everyone loved to hate in 2010. Although we were resistant at first, by the end of the summer, no one could help falling in love with the cool, comfortable, and fashion-forward rompers in every color, pattern, and fabric. The full-length romper belongs on the “worst” list, but the mid-thigh and shorty-short versions for summer were the perfect combination of fashion and comfort.

Overall, 2010 was a bad year for fashion and the fashion-forward can anticipate 2011 bringing us new, fresh fashion statements, both good and bad and, with any luck, never seeing couture clogs or sandal boots again.
